How did I get here?

Amanda started me thinking about my journey to Marist as a graduate student. I started another Communication degree over 12 years ago. My children were small and mostly in class I was thinking of them. I tried doing it part time and between being an adjunct at two colleges, all the activities associated with children, and having a husband who is an active musician it just was not something that fit the schedule. It was the item that was being forced into our lives rather than eased into our lives. Then my daughter got sick and life changed into something unrecognizable.

During all this time the internet and computers became an integral part of life. So when I looked around again at graduate programs it was only sensible that I would look at something that I could complete from a hospital room if needed. The ease of that, the relatively quick time to complete a part-time program, and the reputation of Marist all made a difference. I had to be able to complete work in different locations, I did not want to take four years to do a program, and I have a Master's from a reputable public ivy that I did not want to sully with a "less than" online graduate program.

So far it is working. There are some weeks that are a struggle to fit the readings and work into the required elements of my life. There have been times I have done work during my daughter's hospital visits (when I am not actively needed). But many times the work is simply woven into my schedule. I read at lunch when I am able. I post on the forums many times in the early morning. And slowly I am making progress toward the degree.

So the question for the Team Blog is "How do others get to Marist Graduate programs?"

Special thanks to Amanda Howard

  2. Hi Janice, it was actually my son's idea. We were talking one night about how fast the wold is changing and how different he is being tough to write and out of the blue he tells me that I should go back to school. I told him that working, traveling for work and taking care of him was a full load and I just did not have time to go sit in the class. So he tells me that I should sign up for a on-line program. I googled different on-line programs and was very excited that Marist had one. So here I am working on my third masters degree.
